Self care isn’t selfish!

Self-care isn’t selfish! During the pre-flight safety demonstration before take-off, the airlines instruct you to put your oxygen mask on first before helping others because you can’t assist anyone if you don’t first take care of yourself. The same goes for mental health. Sundays are a typical day for rest, relaxation and refueling. But what about the rest of the week?

Experts tell us that one way to eat healthier and save money and time is to “meal prep” for the week ahead. Here are some tips to “prep” for a successful week of self-care:

1) Prioritize self-care EVERY day. We wouldn’t dare attempt a hard day at work without eating. We would get too weak. Don’t wait until your tank is completely empty to refill it. Do things throughout the day to help you to feel rested, relaxed and inspired.

2) Self-care starts early and continues throughout the day. Go for a run or exercise before your kiddo’s are up for the day. Read a devotional or a chapter in an inspirational book or take it to work for your breaks. Take a walk outside after you eat lunch or do anything you enjoy that has nothing to do with work. Tag team with your spouse for some “me time” after dinner with a long bath or catch up on an episode of your favorite show and take turns for an occasional “girls” or “guys” night out.

3) Be aware of the signs of burnout which is an indication that your tank is running on empty. Write down the signs or triggers that let you know it’s time for a break and post them somewhere that will remind you often. Listen to your body and your emotions. When there’s no valid reason for fatigue, sadness or anger, or you’re easily irritated or frustrated, you need to slow down or stop for a “me” moment or a take a few hours or day off.
